FNF Vs. Tricky v3: Clowned Out
FNF Vs. Tricky: Clowned Out Brings the Classic Tricky Mod Back With All-New Art
Vs. Tricky: Clowned Out is a full visual remake of the long-running Tricky mod for Friday Night Funkin, rebuilding the entire experience with fresh art and animation while keeping the core battle against Tricky’s four phases intact.
Tricky, the clown pulled from Madness Combat, returns to Nevada to torment Boyfriend once again. The remake was directed by Banbuds, who also handled the main artwork, alongside co-director Marc Cea, who covered programming and composing duties. The original soundtrack from Rozebud and JADS is still here, running alongside newly added Erect remixes. It launched in 2026, and you can play Vs. Tricky: Clowned Out directly in your browser — kbhgames.com has optimized it to run smoothly even on lower-end PCs, with no download required.
As a nice touch, Boyfriend and Girlfriend are redesigned as Madness Combat-style grunts for this mod, complete with gray skin and the small cross marking on their faces. Also Play FNF Hazier River: Smoke ‘Em Out Struggle and FNF: Wednesday’s Infidelity 2 vs Sad Mickey Mouse
Every Song in the Mod
The main story week, titled CLOWN, covers Tricky’s first three phases, while three additional songs live in freeplay.
The story begins with a song where Tricky still wears his mask, before moving into a faster, angrier track where the mask comes off and the stage fills with flashing signage. The third story song ramps things up dramatically — Tricky transforms into a massive flaming skull monster while Boyfriend shrinks down to a tiny chibi form, making the size difference between the two characters part of the visual spectacle.FNF Vs. Tricky Version 2.0 (Phase 3)
The story’s final phase carries a single difficulty option named “Unfair,” with its Erect-remix counterpart called “Nightmare.” Beyond the story, there’s a freeplay song composed by Marc Cea, pitting a grunt Boyfriend against a Tricky redesign in a dark, poster-covered brick club room, plus a hidden secret song unlocked by typing a specific code into the freeplay menu, which throws you straight into a fiery battle against a new character.FNF vs Impostor Legacy
The first three songs support Easy, Normal, and Hard, with Erect and Nightmare difficulties available on their remixed versions. The freeplay and secret songs stick to the standard Easy, Normal, and Hard options.
Surviving the Final Two Phases
The third phase introduces a mechanic where certain notes fall as burning fire — hitting one actually damages you significantly, so the correct move is to deliberately let those specific notes pass by untouched.
The final phase swaps that mechanic for outright “death notes,” which don’t just chip away at your health — hitting one ends the song immediately. Regular missed notes in this phase also punish you more heavily than usual, with visual static flooding the screen whenever you slip up.
On top of that, warning signposts flash three times each, and you’re meant to press Space exactly on the third flash to dodge safely — too early or too late both count as a failed dodge. A small creature also appears periodically to drain your health over a few seconds, so staying ahead of its arrival matters.
If the final phase proves too punishing, there’s an easier setting tucked into the Preferences menu (it has a cheeky, informal name) that turns the instant-death notes into a heavy but survivable hit instead, and reduces the overall health drain.
Before moving on, it’s worth checking out the Extras menu, which includes a fanart gallery, concept art, a built-in music player, and full credits. The redrawn art for the giant flaming-skull phase is particularly worth a close look.
Who Made It
Vs. Tricky: Clowned Out came together thanks to a large team. Banbuds directed and handled the main art and animation, while Marc Cea co-directed and contributed secondary art, animation, programming, sound design, and composition. Additional programming came from fiffi the yoshi-sloth, Luscious77, and ChazbillyYT, with Az989 handling menu experimentation. The original soundtrack comes from Rozebud, with JADS composing additional tracks, YingYang48 contributing extra music, and Tsuraran providing a Chicken Dance remix. Background art came from Mkv8, charting from ChubbyGamer464, cutscene animation from Weretoons, the freeplay Tricky sprite from Tri-Dot, promotional art from Braced Yeti, logo design from KaosKurve, and pixel icon work from harveyzstuff.
Special thanks go to EEF!, who directed the original 2025 Tricky project, Krinkels, the creator of Madness Combat where Tricky originates, and TPM Studios for their support.
Controls
Use arrow keys or WASD to hit notes, and Space to dodge the signposts during the final phase. Enter confirms menu selections, and Escape backs out. On mobile devices, notes are tapped directly, and dodging is done by tapping Girlfriend.
Quick FAQ
The mod works fully on mobile, with touch-based menus and a tap-to-dodge mechanic replacing the Space bar during the final phase. In total, there are six songs — the four phase battles that make up Tricky’s story, plus the freeplay song and the hidden secret track. And no, this isn’t the original Tricky mod — it’s a ground-up remake built years later with entirely redrawn sprites, new animation, and remixed music, though the original version remains available to play separately.
